WellàIÆve tried playing Eve three times now over the past two years. So I got the itch again and decided to reopen my account. IÆve been having a wonderful time so far with the new tutorials and learning the salvaging trade.
So last night I decided to upgrade my salvaging potential by getting a brand spanking new Thrasher with all the trimmings. I guess this would be a good time to tell you that I decided to kick back and have a couple of beers. ^_^ Anyways, I get my ship all loaded up and headed out to a nice Angel complex. Did I mention I had been drinking a little bit?
Whelpàa long story short I jump in and started tanking the Angels while salvaging the carcasses left by so many battles beforehand. I figure IÆll warp out once my ship got to 1/3 armor (since I had a shield booster and armor repair). LOL, due to my drunkenness my itchy warp-button finger was too slow on the draw. The Angels hit structure while I was aligning towards my jump destination. Then BOOM! I lost my brand spankinÆ new Thrasher on its maiden voyage. Was I ****ed? No, not really. What got my tighty-whiteys in a bunch was my continuing drunken stupidity. I was like ôhey I better go get my frigate salvager, get in there to pick up the parts before someone ninjas themö. BOOM! My frigate was taken out as well.
Moral of the story is: DonÆt drink and fly, kids!

Originally by: Malcanis No, the moral is dont dual tank. Just shield tank your thrasher and use the low slot you have freed up to either enhance that tank or increase your damage output.
The above, and I would also recomend that you not salvage as you go in level 1's in a destroyer. Also you really do not need to worry too much about ninjas coming after your missions. Usually they are only able to scan down level 3's and 4's due to heavy drone usage. That is if you are in a deadspace. Either way, unless you are in a level 4 mission hub you will not have to worry about the ninjas till later. Use the slot with the salvager to fit extra turret or launcher.
EDIT: Do not forget to platinum insure all T1 ships. Not sure if you recieved that since you did not mention insurance and said that you had to jump back in the frig.

Okay, thanks for the advice guys! I'm still learning and everything. This actually happened in one of the public Angel bases (I can't remember what the term is call, but anybody can access this Angel area). I thought the Thrasher could take a little more of a pounding, but they just kind of overwhelmed me.
I'm waiting till I finish all the tutorials, then I'm gonna start looking for a good corp to get into.

How come people who drink more than a couple of beers seem to never have this problem?
Think my real problem was how to get those beer bottles open in my gooey pod juice.

No worries. But the issue is that the destroyer class is paper thin and as you can see from the lack of mid and low slots its ability to tank is severly hampered. It is a class of ship that is used in really 4 situations that I know of.
1) Advanced level 1 missions for standing. Meaning use it to grind standings once you have good tanking skills or navigation skills to kite the NPC firgates.
2) Anti-frigate platform in pvp. It does not last long in many situations.
3) Dedicated salvager
4) "Sniping" in pvp

The dedicated salvager was what I was going for. Unfortunately I decided to drop into a hot zone full blinky Angels. I'm just glad I didn't have my ship fitted with expensive tractor beams and salvaging rigs. That would have really burned. Signature: Reserved Parking. |
